Every time you turn on your television, you're exposed to ungodly ideas, sin and influences of the world. We have to be careful what we watch, but we can't always control what we see or hear. For example, I have a friend who works on the docks and he's bombarded with the most foul language imaginable.
Every day our born again spirits are tender. When we're exposed to filth and evil, it affects us, it hurts us. Over time, it can affect our relationship with God. Avoid what you can, but wash away the rest. Just as you take a shower when you're dirty, wash your soul with the water of God's word.
Now, this may be a new idea to some of you, but it's in the Bible. Ephesians 5:25-26. Husbands, love your wives. Just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word. In John 15:3, Jesus told his disciples, you're already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.
Imagine that! They were cleansed because of the words they heard and applied in their lives. Our souls, our thoughts, beliefs, emotions and desires are purified as we read and apply God's Word to our lives. The Bible isn't just a guidebook, it's a purifier, a source of light and life that our souls desperately need.
Action step. If you're dealing with impure, ungodly thoughts or beliefs or emotions even and desires, open your Bible. Look up the truth. What does God say about that topic? Write it down, memorize it, declare it over yourself, and when temptation comes, defeat it by replacing that lie with the truth.
The Word and the Spirit will fight for you as you stand on God's Word.
