Why do we struggle to understand the Bible? People are soulish creatures. We live dominated by our thoughts, our beliefs, desires and emotions. In other words, our souls, which are our minds, wills and emotions. We approach God and the Bible with our souls. We filter Scripture through our emotions, our desires and our beliefs.
Our understanding is limited by our lives as human beings. God's a spirit. He rules a realm we can't even see, and he doesn't think like us. Isaiah 55:8 for my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. To understand God's spiritual book, we need to learn how to discern and understand not from our souls, our intellects or our minds, our wills and emotions, but from our spirits, the part of us that hears God.
The Bible is spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14 the person without the spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, but considers them foolishness and cannot understand them because they're discerned only through the Spirit. We simply lack the capacity to understand or appreciate the value of God's Word unless God reveals it to us.
And the power to live like Jesus comes only from God speaking to us. And he does that most often through this Word. The key here is only through relationship with God will our spirits receive the precious truths of His Word.
