Life has a way of knocking us down repeatedly, leaving many stuck in a pit of despair, depression, and hopelessness. If you feel like you can’t climb out, you’re not alone. Millions of people face this struggle every day, but the good news is that you don’t have to stay in that pit. Psalm 40:1-4 reveals how God can lift you out, set your feet on solid ground, and restore your hope. In this video, we share actionable steps to let God rescue you and bring new joy, peace, and purpose to your life.
To illustrate the devastating effects of despair, I shared the story of Milo, a monkey placed in a psychological experiment. After numerous failed attempts to escape an inverted pyramid called the “Pit of Despair”—Milo gave up completely, becoming motionless, hopeless, and broken. This experiment mirrors the human experience of depression. Life can feel like a pit we’re trapped in, repeatedly dashing our hopes until we stop trying altogether. Depression immobilizes us, leaving us hopeless and powerless.
But there is a way out.
The Bible introduces us to David, a man who knew the depths of despair. Rejected by his family, hunted by King Saul, and devastated by tragedies within his own family, David endured incredible heartache. Yet, in the midst of his suffering, David wrote Psalm 40 as a testimony of God’s faithfulness to lift him out of despair. In verses 1-3, he describes how God turned to him, heard his cry, lifted him from the slimy pit, set his feet on a rock, and gave him a new song of praise.
So how can you let God lift you out of the pit of despair? Here are four actionable steps:
1. Wait Patiently on God
David reminds us that waiting is not passive but active and expectant. Trust God’s timing and remember how He has come through for you in the past. As Isaiah 40:31 promises, those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength.
2. Cry Out to God
Verse 1 says God turned to David and heard his cry. When you cry out to God, He bends down to listen. Tell Him your struggles and trust that His heart is for you.
3. Trust God to Lift You Out of the Pit
Verse 2 shows us that God is ready to lift you out of the pit of despair. Whether your pit is disappointment, failure, or loss, God will set your feet on solid ground as you trust in His promises. Renew your mind with God’s Word. As Romans 12:2 says, let God transform you by changing the way you think.
4. Praise God
Verse 3 says God gave David a new song of praise. Worship is a powerful way to shift your focus from your troubles to God’s goodness. When others see you praising God in the midst of your struggles, they will also be drawn to trust in Him.
If you’re feeling stuck today, don’t give up. God sees you, hears your cry, and is ready to lift you out of the pit. Replace fear and hopelessness with God’s eternal promises, and He will restore your joy and peace. Take the first step today—cry out to Him, renew your mind with His Word, and worship Him. Let God set your feet on solid ground and put a new song in your heart.
